On Friday, May 31st, the Michigan Alliance for Reproductive Technologies and Sciences held its annual meeting in East Lansing, MI where researchers across Michigan presented their latest work on reproductive health science. Chandler lab graduate student Jake Reske was selected to give a competing oral presentation on his research and proceeded to win the Best Oral Presentation Award! Way to go, Jake!
The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) held a special symposium this year from May 9-12 at MSU East Lansing campus titled "Evolution and Core Processes in Gene Expression." Chandler lab graduate student Jake Reske received the Second Place Prize Award for his poster presentation titled "Genome-wide analysis of chromatin structure and function following ARID1A loss in the endometrial epithelium." Congratulations!
Mike will be speaking at the Karmanos Cancer Institute during the Ovarian Cancer Focus Group/Molecular Therapeutics Mini Symposium, a meeting to promote collaboration between MSU and KCI researchers. Mike will speak on the topic of his forthcoming publication
Subechhya Neupane, a graduate student in the Grand Valley State University Professional Science Masters in Cell and Molecular Biology (Biotechnology emphasis) has joined the Chandler Lab for a summer internship. Subechhya completed her undergrad degree in Microbiology in her home country of Nepal. She moved to US two years ago to complete her Master's degree. Subechhya was looking for an internship opportunity in Grand Rapids and that is when she found the Chandler lab. She will be working on a project to create a mouse model of gynecologic cancer using CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing approach in vivo. In her free time, Subechhya loves traveling, indulging in nature and enjoying time by the beach at Lake Michigan.
Michigan State University medical student, Cristina Perez is joining the Chandler lab.
Asked to introduce herself, Cristina shared, "Hello Everyone! My name is Cristina Perez and I am a third year medical student at MSU CHM (Michigan State University College of Human Medicine).I grew up in Grand Haven, MI and have been in Michigan ever since. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in Biopsychology, Cognition and Neuroscience. I have been involved in both clinical and lab research in the past. During this past summer I worked in a research lab at Stanford University, where my main focus was trying to identify and understand the role of Nemo-like Kinase in various cancers. Aside from school and research, I enjoy running and training for marathons, traveling, and keeping up with the latest food scene. I am excited to be a part of this lab and am looking forward to getting to know all of you!" Cristina will be doing double-duty: clinical rotations for medical school at Spectrum Health and research experiments in the lab when her schedule allows. We are pleased that Cristina has chosen to join us! Michigan State University Graduate Student Genna Wilber is doing her first rotation in our lab. This is Genna's first year in the Biomolecular Science program and she will rotate through three MSU labs before deciding which one to do her graduate project in. Prior to coming to MSU to pursue her Ph.D, Genna graduated from Oakland University with dual majors in Biology and English. We are excited to have Genna join us!
After a successful rotation during March and April, Jake Reske is joining our lab. Jake is a graduate student in the MSU Genetics Program, and he will pursue his Ph.D. thesis research in the Chandler Lab. Jake has a keen interest in using functional genomics to address key questions in female reproductive tract cancers and disease. Learn more about Jake on our "Staff" page.
Mike R. Wilson was awarded a three year postdoctoral fellowship from the American Cancer Society for his grant entitled, "Defining the Role of Endometrium in Endometriosis-Associated Ovarian Cancer." This is a very prestigious award granted to only 17 post doctoral researchers in the Spring of 2017. The grant started on January 1, 2018 and will continue for 3 years.
Congratulations Mike on this amazing achievement! Click here for the link to the MSU announcement. Dr. Chandler and Dr. Wilson will be attending the AACR conference Addressing Critical Questions in Ovarian Cancer Research and Treatment in Pittsburgh, PA from October 1 to October 4, and will be presenting research on the role of endometrium in endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer
